Calhoun Seniors Turn Pie-a-Teacher Fundraiser into Mental Health Awareness Event

Seniors in the leadership program at Calhoun High School hosted a spirited Pie-a-Teacher fundraiser after school on April 24, transforming a fun-filled event into a show of support for mental health awareness.
The initiative began as a passion project in the senior leadership class, led by Brian Joyce.
Moved by peers’ stories of shared mental health challenges, the class voted to move forward with a plan to raise both awareness and funds for a related cause.
"I believe that mental health is a condition that needs to be acknowledged and taken more seriously. Through this project, we helped people who are impacted by mental health issues realize that they are not alone," said senior Taylor Phillips.
"I think it was great that we were able to bring awareness to such a serious topic and to be able to do it in a fun and lighthearted way that brings everyone together,” added senior Andrew Buono.
Students worked collaboratively to develop a multi-step approach, including delivering presentations in physical education classes, designing and posting informational flyers throughout the school, and organizing engaging fundraising efforts such as the pie-a-teacher event and an upcoming car wash.
During the event, students donated $5 per toss for the chance to throw a whipped cream-topped sponge at participating teachers, administrators, and staff members, all in good fun and in support of an important cause. The fundraiser brought the school community together while sparking meaningful conversations about mental health.
In total, the students raised more than $350, which was donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
“Through their initiative, the seniors demonstrated empathy, leadership, and a commitment to making a difference -proving that even small acts can have a meaningful impact,” added Joyce.
