Kennedy Leaders Deliver Cougar Talks

On the evening of Wednesday, January 14, the students of the Leadership III course at Kennedy High School took the stage to share deeply personal stories that explored the complexities of the human experience. Moving beyond traditional public speaking, the showcase featured a series of CougarTalks focused on themes of managing failure, independence, and the power of connection.
The event was the culmination of months of preparation, during which students were challenged to distill their life lessons into impactful, TED-style talks. From physical constraints to the sanctuary of a kitchen, the talks spanned a wide range of topics.
The night featured several moments that highlighted the students' reflections on personal growth. During a compelling talk on the philosophy of failure, Cole Zinman, challenged the audience to rethink their approach to mistakes, stating that “Golf isn’t about perfection. It’s about managing disaster. It’s about how you respond when something goes sideways.” This sentiment was echoed by Evan Kaplan, who addressed physical challenges by reminding the crowd that “roadblocks just create detours, not dead ends,” and that they serve as “starting lines for a great solution” rather than finishing lines.
The theme of self-acceptance was another powerful thread throughout the evening, notably when Mia Mezzone shared her journey of embracing their own stature, noting that “when you realize you can’t change the thing you hate about yourself, you finally stop wasting energy fighting it and start figuring out how to dominate from exactly where you stand.”
The Leadership III course, designed to push students beyond their comfort zones, emphasizes the importance of communication as a cornerstone of effective leadership.
