Student Representatives Honored at Final CHSD Board Meeting

As the 2024–25 school year comes to a close, the CHSD board of education took a moment during its June 4 meeting to recognize four student representatives for their service throughout the year.
Mia McGorty of the Meadowbrook Alternative Program/Brookside Building programs, Samantha Chaiken of Sanford H. Calhoun, Matt Rowe of John F. Kennedy and Jake Classie of Wellington C. Mepham High Schools regularly shared school highlights and added levity to monthly board meetings with their engaging commentary, were each presented with a commemorative gavel in appreciation of their contributions. The final meeting marked their last official update from the board dais, where they were each gifted a commemorative gavel.
Chaiken said when Calhoun Principal Nicole Hollings first approached her about the opportunity, she was immediately on board and excited.
“Growing up in this community, I have been exposed to some amazing things and have been surrounded by teachers who have made me into the person I am today,” Chaiken said.
Reflecting on her own student experiences, Chaiken expressed gratitude to the board for her educational experience.
“Thank you for giving students a place to call home, no matter their situation,” she added. “Thank you for treating the students like they are your own and for showing us what it means to be a community. Each of you have inspired me to become better and continue to work hard.”
