VIDEO: Bellmore-Merrick Challenge Brings Students Together for a Celebration of Inclusion

Students from 17 Nassau County schools gathered at Calhoun High School on May 20 for the annual Bellmore-Merrick Challenge, a long-standing tradition that celebrates inclusion, teamwork, and school spirit.
Hosted by the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District for the past 20 years, the event gives special needs students an opportunity to socialize with peers from neighboring districts, showcase their abilities, and participate in a day filled with fun and friendly competition. This year’s challenge welcomed hundreds of student participants, along with student buddies who accompanied and supported athletes throughout the day.
Organized by Melanie Picchioni, a special education teacher and Heather Riddiough, a physical education teacher, participants competed in a variety of field day-style activities, including relay races, cornhole, jumping events, and throwing contests.
SEPTA organized donations, including a Kona Ice truck, while the school’s PTSA provided festive balloons, and the Calhoun Sports Boosters supplied water.
Special education chair Melissa Rohr said the Bellmore-Merrick Challenge continues to be one of the district’s most meaningful traditions.
“This event is truly about connection, encouragement, and creating opportunities for every student to shine,” Rohr said. “Seeing students from so many schools come together to support one another and celebrate each other’s successes makes this an incredibly special day for everyone involved.”
The student buddies included high school students from throughout the district, including members of the ACES Clubs at Mepham, Kennedy, MAP, and Calhoun High Schools, as well as leadership students.
Emily Paluseo, Director of Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services, said, “the Bellmore-Merrick Challenge event truly reflects the strength of our district community.”
“Seeing students and staff from across our high school programs work together to create such a memorable experience is incredibly inspiring,” she added.
