GAMS Art Club Visits Art Museum for Immersive Learning

Students from the Grand Avenue Middle School Art Club recently had the opportunity to take their classroom learning beyond the school walls during a special visit to the Hofstra University Museum of Art.
The field trip centered around the exhibition Love Is the Message, showcasing the powerful photography of Jamel Shabazz. Shabazz, known for capturing moments of love, strength, and unity in Black communities, describes his work as “visual medicine” for society.
During the visit, students participated in a close-looking exercise led by a museum educator, where they analyzed elements such as composition and line—concepts they had studied in class. Inspired by Shabazz’s images, the students then created their own photo transfers using printed copies of his work, layering them with watercolor paint to express their personal interpretations of love and connection.
“I was so impressed with the kids' understanding of the theme of the exhibition and how they were able to analyze the composition of the photos,” said Giordano, art teacher and club advisor. “They really embraced the experience and brought their own creativity and insight to the work. The Art Club members definitely felt the love of viewing and creating art.”
