Report: CHSD Among Top in Nation, State

The Central High School District was ranked No. 67 in the nation, according to Niche.com's 2026 study of more than 10,000 school districts across the country.
This represents an incredible accomplishment and a significant climb in rankings since 2019, underscoring the district’s unwavering commitment to educational excellence. The CHSD was also ranked No. 14 in New York State out of 596 districts - placing it in the top 3% in the state.
All three of the district's comprehensive high schools, Kennedy, Calhoun, and Mepham, were ranked in the top 65 of the thousands of high schools statewide. Similarly, both Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue Middle Schools were listed among the top 55 in New York.
The 2026 Niche rankings are based on comprehensive data from the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Census Bureau, and input from surveys and reviews. Factors considered include state test scores, graduation rates, college readiness, SAT/ACT performance, teacher quality, and overall public school district ratings.
"This achievement is a testament to the tireless efforts of our educators, the determination of our students, and the unwavering support of our families and community," said Michael Harrington, Superintendent of Schools. "We are proud to see our district recognized on a national stage and remain committed to preparing every student for success in college, career, and life."
